2009-2010 EAF Foundation Visual Arts Idea Grant Awards

Student art projects in our local schools often begin with the financial support of a Visual Arts Idea Grant from Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation. Each fall, teachers are invited to apply for financial assistance for visual arts related projects, field trips and curriculum based programming.

Congratulations to the following recipients who have received a 2009-2010 Visual Arts Idea Grant from the EAF Foundation.

Elementary School Projects included:

The Art Docent Program at Westgate Elementary; pottery projects with artist Julie Perrine at Edmonds Elementary and Maplewood K-8; Northwest Native Designs in Clay at Martha Lake Elementary; creative book-making at Brighton School; creation of a cement bench with mosaic glass art at Meadowdale Elementary; scientific drawing instruction with WSAC artist Kim Newell at Seaview Elementary; focus on the work and life of Romare Bearden and other artists as a part of an African Studies Program at Martha Lake Elementary; experience in clay, plaster, copper wire and other media with local artist CC Leonard at Beverly Elementary; a study of musicians in wire sculpture at Sherwood Elementary; an Outdoor School Tile Mural at Lynnwood Elementary; and concentration on recycled materials for a school-wide ARTS Program at Brier Elementary.

A major mission of the EAF Foundation continues to be visual arts education in our community. The Visual Arts Idea Grant program has been providing support for visual arts curriculum in K-12 schools since 1994. For this school year $14,810 funded twenty-five projects. In addition, $1,000 was provided to the Edmonds School District Artist in Residency Program. The Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation is delighted with the exciting visual arts opportunities these projects represent for students in our local schools.

The success of this EAF Foundation program begins with community support of the annual Edmonds Arts Festival held each Father’s Day Weekend.

Embossing Project for the Louis Braille School, Edmonds by artist Jim Ballard

Local artist Jim Ballard is developing a prototype book of embossing for the Louis Braille School in Edmonds. The Louis Braille School is a Washington State non-profit private day school for children who are blind or partially sighted offering classes from kindergarten through grade eight.

The artist explained, “I became aware that some of the tactile teaching aids for blind or partially sighted children are pretty awful. In one alphabet book, the letter “A” is next to an apple that is only a raised plastic circle.” As an artist who has worked with a variety of materials and processes, he set out to create embossed images made with watercolor paper that would be more faithful to the subjects being depicted. Text in both English and Braille will be included.

In addition to creating embossed books for the children at the school, Jim plans to show them how to press lightweight sculpting clay into the embossing molds to make three dimensional critters like snakes or scorpions that they will be able to take home.

Jim’s eventual goal is to get this type of Braille book literally into the hands of more blind children and adults. “Your grant money will help make all of this happen!”

Support of such projects begins with the patrons who attend the annual Edmonds Arts Festival. Thanks for helping to celebrate the arts for everyone in our community.
